Self Sufficiency in the Blue Mountains.

This page covers water, solar electricity and vegetable gardening.
Vegetables grown at 20 Alan Street last summer….

Yerranderie is 600 metres elevation in the South Western Blue Mountains and nearby is Lake Burragorang, a very large body of water which has a significant influence on the micro climate of our area. It tends to moderate low and high temperatures and we do not get many bad frosts.

All the hard work for achieving self sufficiency at 20 Alan Street has already been done!

20 Alan Street has a vegetable garden house with metal chicken wire to keep the animals out and a net cover which keeps the occasional frost off the plants. It has a remote internet controlled watering system.

Take a look at the sustainable vegetable garden at 20 Alan Street in this video.

Water System

The house has 4 tanks with a capacity of 25,000 litres. This is enough to comfortably last 2 people more than a year with moderate water awareness. With serious water saving techniques you could expect this amount to last 2 years with zero rain. There is a large roof area so a recent thunderstorm of 28mm provided about 5,000 litres. The tank on the stand provides gravity water to the house and cabin and there are two pumps to lift water up to this tank from the lower ones. The 20,000 litre tank and fire shed across the road on the right is Wollondilly Council’s contribution to fire mitigation by providing infrastructure to assist the RFS.

Power System

The house has a substantial solar panel array and battery capacity. The VIDEO TOURS page has a video showing how this system works. The power system is ultra modern and extremely well set up so you can live a normal life. Standard household appliances are included in the sale… fridge, washing machine, microwave, vacuum cleaner, TV, Sound system, computer and even a sewing machine! All with no electricity bills!
